An original invitation sent from James Buchanan to former First Lady Dolley Madison. Sent while Buchanan served in his role as Secretary of State under James Polk. The invitation is circa late 1840's, a pencil annotation in the corner suggests 1848. The invitation was almost certainly for Buchanan's annual grand ball held in January of each year.
Buchanan and Dolley Madison were good friends even having their photograph taken together in 1849, one of the first photographs of any First Lady. Buchanan notably helped Dolley manage a pension she had been awarded by Congress.The invitation reads "Mr. Buchanan requests the honor of Mrs. Madison's company on Friday evening the 23rd of January at 8 o'clock at Carusi's Saloon".Framed to museum standards using 99% UV-blocking museum glass. Overall frame measures 9.5"x8.5", card itself measures 4.25"x3". Light foxing to card as to be expected for its 170 years of age.Sold as is, as shown.
