Fourth President of the United States JAMES MADISON autograph Free Frank envelope front panel, dated May 8 [1835 or 1836] from Orange County, Virginia to Richard Cutts, Esq. in Washington. The envelope is signed in the upper right hand corner by James Madison, and addressed in the hand of former First Lady DOLLEY MADISON. Richard Cutts was Dolley's brother-in-law, who served in the House of Representatives from 1801 to 1813.

There is no year on the date stamp but this cancellation first appeared in 1835 and since Madison died on June 28, 1836 the free frank can be dated to the last year of Madison's life.

 

James Madison was an American statesman, diplomat, and Founding Father who served as the fourth President of the United States from 1809 to 1817. Madison was popularly acclaimed the "Father of the Constitution" for his pivotal role in drafting and promoting the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights.

 

Item condition is as shown with overall toning and light wrinkles consistent with age, use and handling. Envelope is encased in a 4.25" x 7.25" slab.
