Being guillotined at just 38, Louis XVI is one of the scarcest autographs in historical collecting. In signing this massive 3-page folio on December 23, 1783, Louis approves expenses related to Chalons, an important administrative and commerce center in the French countryside. The King indicates his approval by signing the document near the middle as "LOUIS", indicating that the Royal Council of Finance had concluded their meeting "held at Versailles".

Chalons would later play a pivotal role in the ill-fated Louis' misfortune when in 1791, the King and royal family attempted to flee the French Revolution. The King was arrested at 11pm on June 21st, 1791 in Varennes and the fugitive royal family would subsequently stay overnight in Chalons on the way back to Paris.
