Dear Sir:

Your letter of the 23rd into asking me not to make use of the name of Col. Totten in consideration with the proposed ___?___ was received yesterday. As I had received none of the papers referred to, I scarcely know what was meant by it. This means however all the papers referred to in your letter are received and your inquiries will be carefully observed.

Very respectfully yours,

U.S. Grant

Twice elected President, ULYSSES S. GRANT (born Hiram Ulysses Grant (1822 - 1885) was the 18th President of the United States, from 1869 - 1877. Grant led the Union Armies to victory over the Confederacy in the American Civil War, which ended shortly after Robert E. Lee surrendered to him at Appomatox in 1865. It is frequently reported that Grant's middle name was "Simpson". In fact, it was not - his middle name was Ulysses and he later admitted that the "S" in his middle name simply stood for nothing.

Folds consistent with age, use and wear, as shown. Letter is in very fine condition given that it is 150 years old.
