Dated April 19, 1793, Jefferson writes transmitting official copies of the Acts passed during the 2nd Session of the 2nd United States Congress. Interestingly, the letter is signed by Jefferson on \u003c\/b\u003e\u003cb\u003e18th anniversary of the Battle of Lexington and Concord. \u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/font\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cfont size=\"5\" face=\"Tahoma\"\u003e\u003cb style=\"\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/font\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cfont size=\"5\" face=\"Tahoma\"\u003e\u003cb\u003eMost notably, the Acts Jefferson transmits here include the Fugitive Slave Act of 1793, one of the earliest federal laws addressing slavery across state lines. The law made it a federal offense to assist escaped enslaved individuals and established the legal framework for their capture and return, even from free states.
