The plate is from a set specially commissioned for President Ulysses S. Grant and First Lady Julia Dent Grant, and bearing the presidential “USG” monogram within a laurel wreath, circa 1868. The plates were then later used by the Grants at their Manhattan apartment, post-presidency.
