Dated December 8th 1894, Nightingale inscribes the book to her Goddaughter "Ruth Florence Verney" and refers to herself as "the old God Mother". Nightingale's belief of a life spent in service of others rings true in this profound inscription wishing that both her and her goddaughter "be always pressing on the daily road of gentle usefulness & humble recording of the highest which leads to God". The book is 128 years old and as such has some condition issues. Title page detached, some light finger-soiling, portrait of author laid onto recto of page inscribed by Nightingale, upper hinge cracked, bookplate of Ruther Verney to front pastedown.
