UNCONDITIONALLY GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC! This autograph has been examined and certified authentic by the industry experts at PSA/DNA. The letter is encapsulated in PSA/DNA's proprietary sonically-sealed holder.
Aaron Burr was the third Vice President of the United States, serving under Thomas Jefferson, and is best known for killing Alexander Hamilton in a duel in 1804. Ambitious and controversial, Burr later became the center of a major treason trial. In 1807, Burr was tried for treason after allegedly plotting to create an independent nation in the western U.S. or Mexico. Although President Jefferson pushed for conviction, Burr was acquitted due to lack of concrete evidence and Chief Justice John Marshall's strict interpretation of the Constitution’s definition of treason.
Burr has written:
"Enclosed is an important statement of my dealings with Luckett & a few questions arising out of it. It may be material to conclude him as to the pay? of money ^ to me as in qu[estion] 1st for [Thomas?] Prather will prove the pay! to him. If S[amuel] N[oland] L[uckett] should see the force of the qu., he will evade and equivocate. He charges the bills, but gives no credit for them.
The charge of 1400 Dam's[?] is quite inadmissible as he advanced nothing. From a review of the transaction & without the aid of papers, I am persuaded that this man is several thousand dollars in my debt. A.Burr"
Letter is in good condition overall. Mailing folds, toning, irregular edges, some paper loss, as to be expected with a letter which is over 200 years old. Some instances of "Newton's Rings", a harmless byproduct of the PSA/DNA encapsulation process resulting in "bubbles" as seen on the back of the slab. Overall encapsulate measures appx. 10" x 13".
A handsome and impressive addition to the collection of the history buff, autograph enthusiast, or Hamilton devotee. An exceptional investment opportunity, and a truly rare and remarkable find.
