Legendary 16th President of the United States, ABRAHAM LINCOLN lengthy legal brief, circa 1845 signed and inscribed at conclusion, "By consent, general replication in short – Harris + Lincoln". An early legal document signed by the future President during his days riding the circuit. The document is a portion of an answer to a complaint about fraudulently conveyed lands. The full document was folded within the encapsulate, as shown.
The document is filled out in a secretarial hand with only the lower line and signature by Lincoln.
Before becoming President Abraham Lincoln worked as a lawyer, often defending ordinary people in court and earning a reputation for honesty and fairness while traveling between towns, often on horseback. Lincoln quickly became one of the most active regulars on the circuit often joining counsel with local lawyers. Harris may refer to a local lawyer from Morgan County, or fellow lawyer and Illinois politician Thomas L. Harris.
