American Naval Officer and statesman, Fleet Admiral WILLIAM D. LEAHY First Day Cover featuring an inset autograph WHITE HOUSE calling card, along with a dramatic red, white & blue portrait of the celebrated Admiral. After retiring from the Navy, Leahy later served as Chief of Staff and advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt for the duration of World War II.
Leahy was the most senior United States military officer on active duty during World War II. Throughout his career, he held several titles and exercised considerable influence over foreign and military policy. As a fleet admiral, he was the first flag officer ever to hold a five-star rank in the U.S. Armed Forces. Post-retirement, Leahy was recalled to active duty and became Chief of Staff to President Roosevelt in 1942.
