$750.00

Guaranteed Authentic

Infamous Boston Tea Party participant, Merchant and Patriot AMASA DAVIS scarce handwritten autograph note signed from Boston dated April 21, 1801. Davis authorizes a militia order to Mr. Samuel Goore to "Deliver to the bearer One Standard for a company of Artillery in the 2d Brigade 1st Division of the Militia, Common Wealth of Mass[achusetts]", and signs at conclusion in his capacity as Quartermaster. The standard refers to a company flag or guidon – a symbol of unit identity for an artillery company. Davis served as Quartermaster General for Massachusetts from 1787 to 1825. Notably, the is the first and so far only Amasa Davis autograph which PSA has authenticated!

At the time of the Tea Party, Davis was a 29-year old merchant and trader living at the corner of Washington and Perry Streets in Boston in 1773 and working in the family's grocery business. While it is unknown as to the specific reason for his participation in the "destruction of the tea" on Griffin's Wharf in December 1773, like many Boston merchants and members of the Sons of Liberty, he likely objected to the Tea Act which allowed the British Government to bypass colonial merchants while enforcing unfair tax policies.

During the war in 1776, Davis was drafted from the militia to serve in the Continental Army, but paid a fine to be excused. Despite this, he served during the war, later achieving the rank of Brigadier General.
