Clinton was on hand in Maryland on April 11, 2000 to witness Governor Parris Glendening sign a bill requiring trigger locks and mandatory safety courses, among other things. Clinton was a strong advocate of gun safety legislation and had previously signed the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act (commonly called the Federal Assault Weapons Ban) of 1994. The ban was law for a decade before expiring in 2004.
