1912 was a busy year for Washington. Having just published his book The Man Farthest Down, he went on a major educational speaking tour across Florida, and secured a landmark grant from Sears-Roebuck President Julius Rosenwald to build six rural schools for Black students in Alabama. From 1895 until his death in 1915, Washington was the United States' preeminent African American leader of his day.
