"The Trustees of the New York and Brooklyn Bridge request the honor of the presence of __________, at the Opening Ceremonies, to take place on Thursday, May 24th, at two o'clock, P.M."

Issued by the Board of Trustees, the mayors of both cities, and chief engineer Washington Roebling. Under construction for over a dozen years, the Brooklyn Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time, a marvel of modern steel-wire engineering. It remains one of the iconic monuments of New York City, linking the cities of New York and Brooklyn back then for the first time, transforming commerce and daily life in the region.

The events of the day included speeches, bands, cannon fire, fireworks and notable attendees such as President Chester A. Arthur and New York's governor Grover Cleveland.
