Renowned English author, CHARLES DICKENS undated handwritten Free Frank envelope addressed for "Immediate" delivery to "William Hall Esquire / 186 Strand" in London, and boldly signed by Dickens at lower left with dramatic flourishes above and below.

Dickens, a novelist, journalist, short story writer and social critic created some of literature's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. Widely hailed as a literary genius, among Dickens' best-known works are A CHRISTMAS CAROL, OLIVER TWIST, NICHOLAS NICKLEBY, GREAT EXPECTATIONS and A TALE OF TWO CITIES.

William Hall and his partner Edward Chapman, a bookseller and publisher, were looking for a writer to supply text to accompany comic plates by the artist Robert Seymour. They turned to Dickens to provide the written captions. This envelope likely dates from this period. Chapman & Hall were Dickens publishers from 1849 - 1844, and again from 1858 - 1870. The Chapman & Hall imprint is still active today.
