This is the only other known genuine lock of Charlotte Brontë's hair outside of the renowned Brontë Parsonage Museum collection in Haworth, England. Notably, both locks originate from the same source – Brontë's lifelong friend, Ellen Nussey. We acquired the lock at Forum Auction, the same auction which the Brontë Parsonage Museum acquired an Emily Brontë painting for their collection.
PROVENANCE:
A substantial lock of Charlotte Brontë’s hair, given by her friend Ellen Nussey to be shared between Lady Morrison and Genevieve Wigfall, housed in an envelope. Wigfall inscribed the envelope, “A part of a lock of hair of Charlotte Brontë’s given to me by Miss Ellen Nussey April, 1889. Leeds, Genevieve Wigfall”.
The letter from Lady Morrison to Mrs. Wigfall states "I had a letter from Miss Nussey the other day in which she enclosed some of Charlotte Bronte's hair to be divided between my sister Ms. Morrison and yourself". Notably, Lady Morrison and Ellen Nussey were friends of over a decade, the Brontë museum houses similar hair which was "given by Ellen Nussey to her friend Lady Morrison in the 1880's".
Ellen Nussey (1817-97) was born in Birstall Smithies in the West Riding of Yorkshire. She was a lifelong friend and correspondent of Charlotte Brontë. Genevieve Wigfall (1850-1900), was the wife of Francis Halsey Wigfall, the American consul at Leeds, England.
A pioneering English novelist and poet, and the eldest of the famous Brontë sisters, Charlotte Brontë’s literary works left an indelible mark on the 19th-century literary landscape with novels, JANE EYRE and THE PROFESSOR, among others. Born in Thornton, West Yorkshire, England, into a clergyman’s family, her early life was marked by the loss of her mother and two older siblings, which profoundly influenced her later writings. Tragically, Charlotte herself would soon follow at the age of 38.
A literary classic, JANE EYRE is regarded as one of the most beloved romances of all time, a classic taught and studied in the nearly 180 years since it's publication. It has been widely adapted for radio, television, theater and film.
