CHESTER ARTHUR WHITE HOUSE PLACE CARD SIGNED
21st President of the United States CHESTER A. ARTHUR autographed embossed WHITE HOUSE state dinner place card with gold gilt edges signed in pencil, AS PRESIDENT, circa 1882. Featuring a gold embossed eagle, the card was reserved for C.A. Bliss, a prominent banker and hotelier.
We know of this approximate timeline because a partial guest list (presumably by Bliss) included on the back of the place card which erroneously juxtaposes "C.L. Tiffany" (sic) or more accurately – American artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany – as one of the attending dinner guests. Arthur had commissioned Tiffany to redecorate the State Dining Room in 1882. By far the greatest cost was Tiffany's artistic painting, with walls painted in many shades and textures of yellow and highlighted in silver. Arthur refused to move into the White House until it had been redecorated.
