NASA Flight Research Center cover, boldly signed by Francis R. “Dick” Scobee (1939–1986), the future Commander of the ill-fated Space Shuttle Challenger mission STS-51-L. Postmarked October 21, 1975 at Edwards Air Force Base, this historic piece is cacheted with an image of the X-24B lifting body, one of NASA’s most important experimental aircraft for atmospheric re-entry and spaceplane research.

This envelope is further annotated “Capt. Scobee – Flight No. 32-45”, identifying Scobee as pilot on the program. Scobee, who would later give his life in service to space exploration, began his NASA career as a research pilot on programs such as the X-24B, before selection as an astronaut in 1978.
