SCARCE HERO OF WATERLOO SIGNED INVITATION TO THE CORONATION OF KING GEORGE IV

Legendary Waterloo Hero ARTHUR WELLESLEY, the 1st Duke of Wellington authentic hand-signed autograph King George IV Coronation Day Admission Card to Westminster Hall. The elaborate, numbered invitation admitted the bearer to observe the banquet immediately following the Coronation. Wellington inscribes at lower left, "For Miss Maria Arbuthnot, Wellington", allowing her access to "The Lord High Constable's Box". Peers and other esteemed guests requested tickets to not only watch the ceremony in Westminster but also watch the banquet in temporary gallery seating set up around the Hall. Over 2,000 guests ate at the banquet but many more sat in the galleries to watch the pomp and ceremony of the banquet.

The card, elaborately embossed by Dobbs and printed by Whiting features the Earl Marshal's seal. Dobbs' firm (founded in 1803) pioneered the use of decorative blind stamping for decorating invitation cards, later used to provide decoration for Valentine and other greeting cards. 

Following his heroic service in the Waterloo campaign resulting in the decisive defeat of Napoleon's army, Wellesley went on to become Prime minister of the United Kingdom as well as Commander-in-Chief of the British Army, a post he held until his death in 1852.
