Florence Nightingale's Moving 1885 Tribute to Crimean War Hero General Gordon, "God's Hero"
Legendary Crimean War Nurse and renowned Nursing pioneer, FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE, authentic autographed book, "Colonel Gordon in Central Africa" signed and gifted to Herbert Crooks, December 1885.
A lengthy inscription, Nightingale writes,
"Herbert Crooks -
with Florence Nightingale's best wishes for his success + for his leading a manly, steady life and that we may each of us, each in his or her own measure, learn by the example of the pure hero, God's hero, Gordon, in these pages.
Dec 1885."
Nightingale and the late Colonel Gordon were both veterans of the Crimean War. He later served in Africa as Governor of Equatoria and later as Governor-General of the Sudan where he mapped the Nile, fought the slave trade, and died valiantly during the Siege of Khartoum. When General Gordon was killed in January 1885, Nightingale deeply mourned him. She wrote a moving private letter describing him as a "saint & hero" expressing profound admiration for Gordon's character and sacrifice.
Herbert Crooks appears to have been a young resident of Holloway, the Derbyshire village adjoining Nightingale’s family home at Lea Hurst. Nightingale knew Crooks personally, took an interest in his welfare, and evidently presented this volume as a form of moral encouragement and guidance when he was approximately twenty-two years old.
Today, Florence Nightingale is perhaps best known for her role in the Crimean War where she was essential to caring for many of the wounded soldiers often tending to the wounded at night by lamplight – earning her the now-famous nickname. Throughout her life, Nightingale published many works that helped pave the way for modern nursing today. She was also a founding member of the British Red Cross and to this day International Nurses day is celebrated on her birthday, in her honor.
Published in 1885, "Colonel Gordon in Central Africa" is the historical, non-fiction account of Gordon's time in Colonial Africa as told from original letters and documents. Appx. 466pp.
