A DESIRABLE ENVELOPE FROM PRESIDENT FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT'S PERSONAL STAMP COLLECTION COLLECTED BY HIM AT THE WHITE HOUSE!
32nd President of the United States, FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT his personally owned stamped envelope from the WHITE HOUSE. The attached envelope is one of 42 taken from an original White House binder from the landmark 1946 sale of FDR's personal stamp collection.
The envelope bears the distinctive H.R. Harmer authentication backstamp seen above, and similar envelopes from the Roosevelt collection can also be found in the FDR Presidential Library as well as in the National Archives.
The envelopes were postmarked to the President himself at the White House by FDR's Naval aide, Captain Paul H. Bastedo, documenting his ports of call aboard the USS-Quincy. Bastedo served as Captain of the Quincy from 1937 - 1939, before eventually retiring from the Navy as a Rear Admiral. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
The USS-Quincy was sunk at the battle of Savo Island in 1942, with 370 men dead and 167 wounded. The wreck was rediscovered in 1992 by renowned TITANIC underwater archaeologist Dr. Robert Ballard.
Excellent provenance, stamped on reverse "FROM THE FRANKLIN D ROOSEVELT COLLECTION / AUTHENTICATED BY H. R. HARMER, INC. N.Y." Stamps and stamped envelopes featured prominently by the FDR Presidential library in conjunction with the NATIONAL ARCHIVES also bear the same stamping on the back. See reference photo for details.
The binder that contained the envelopes originated from the landmark 1946 sale of Roosevelt's stamp collection: Roosevelt famously devoted an hour or two daily to his prized collection. An avid, lifelong collector who amassed over a million stamps, after his death, stamps were found "all over the White House". With no specific provision in his will for disposal the stamps were sent to auction by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, first appearing at H.R. Harmer international stamp auctioneers in 1946.
In fine condition as shown. See photos for exact condition. Envelope has been mounted to graphic display sheet using postal corners so it may be removed, examined and enjoyed.
