Emil Hurja, often referred to as the "Wizard of Washington" was an American newspaper editor and political consultant. He was a pioneer of political opinion polling and played an advisory role during the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Isaac Roosevelt (1726-1794), FDR's great-great-grandfather was a prominent sugar merchant, and president of the Bank of New York. Friends and associates included Nicholas Low, Alexander Hamilton, John Hancock, and John Jay. President Roosevelt had an appreciation for local, state, and national history – especially as it related to the Roosevelt family. It is assumed that FDR's letter to Hurja pertains to the acquisition of Low's archive of letters with Isaac Roosevelt-related content.
