Extraordinarily rare advance issue of Franklin D. Roosevelt's first inaugural address containing the complete text of Roosevelt’s timeless speech, boldly signed by Roosevelt at the conclusion. Delivered at the height of the Great Depression, the address introduced one of the most enduring lines in American political history: “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Roosevelt has signed with a tremendous bold signature at the conclusion!
According to FDR's bibliographer Ernest J. Halter, FDR commissioned a limited printing in the form of an advanced copy of his address expressly for his personal review before the swearing-in ceremony. He intended to read from it on March 4, which is why it was published with bold, dark text. At the last minute Roosevelt decided to read his address from the typescript which he corrected in his own hand, he distributed the advanced copies among his close circle.
Accompanied by the original transmittal letter from FDR's friend and advisor Clarence E Pickett. Pickett forwarded the advanced issue of FDR's speech to his friend Rev W. E. Brooks which Pickett adds "I am glad you called my attention to this be-cause I had the President autograph one for me too".
Washington D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1933. First edition, advance issue. 4to. 9 pp. Original printed wrappers, boldly signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt at the end of text. Wrappers slightly creased, rear wrapper heavily soiled from mounting residue, not affecting signature on last page of text; scattered light foxing.
