Top-Secret Manhattan Project Director Robert Oppenheimer Signed Quote "The Trouble With Secrecy..."

American Theoretical Physicist and "Father of the Atomic Bomb" autograph typewritten quote signed from a January 1955 "See It Now" interview with renowned journalist Edward R. Murrow. Both the Oppenheimer signature and printed quotation are original.

Alluding to the development of the top secret atomic bomb Manhattan Project, Oppenheimer offers a unique perspective on secrecy in science:

"The trouble with secrecy isn't that it inhibits science, but that it denies to the government itself the wisdom and resources of the whole community, of the whole country. The only remedy is to let everybody say what he thinks is true or false. We have to have free, uncorrupted communication. This is the heart of freedom."

On January 4, 1955, Edward R. Murrow visited the Institute for Advanced Study to interview J. Robert Oppenheimer, the Institute's third Director. The Institute is an independent center for theoretical research and intellectual inquiry located in Princeton, New Jersey. Oppenheimer had previously served as the director of the Manhattan Project's top secret Los Alamos Laboratory during World War II.  He is often called the "father of the atomic bomb for his role in overseeing the development of the first nuclear weapons.
