Guaranteed Authentic
15th President of the United States JAMES BUCHANAN authentic letter signed dated April 2, 1846 from his home in Lancaster, PA regarding a legal judgment he had obtained against the estate of W. Caldwell, from a prominent Lancaster family of hoteliers for monies due him, likely for Buchanan's services as an attorney. The letter is in the hand of a secretary, but is authentically signed by Buchanan at the conclusion.
Erroneously addressed from "Washington", and subsequently corrected from his home in "Lancaster", at the time Buchanan was serving as the nation's 17th Secretary of State under President James K. Polk.
The Caldwell House was a prominent 19th century hotel in downtown Lancaster, PA, historically significant as the site where President-elect Abraham Lincoln addressed a crowd from a second floor balcony in February 1861 while enroute to his inauguration. The site later became the Hotel Brunswick.
