A lifelong bachelor, Buchanan never married and is the only President who never married. Buchanan's connection to Lancaster was profound, representing Pennsylvania in both houses of the U.S. Congress. He moved to Lancaster in 1809 to study law, became an active Federalist and lawyer and established his home at his Wheatland estate in 1848. He lived at Wheatland for the rest of his life, where he retired after his presidency and died in 1868.
