The "MC" inscription being a designation of his position as a Member of Congress. The envelope is addressed in a secretarial hand to "Prof. B. a. Hinsdale" in Hiram, Ohio. The envelope is postmarked January 10th, 1870.
Burke Aaron Hinsdale was an American educator, minister, historian, and close associate of President James A. Garfield. A faculty member at Hiram College and later a professor at the University of Michigan, Hinsdale became one of Garfield’s closest intellectual confidants and earliest biographers. Following Garfield’s assassination in 1881, Hinsdale helped preserve and interpret the late president’s legacy through memorial writings, speeches, and historical works.
Before modern postage systems, presidents and other officials had the privilege of "franking" mail—signing the envelope in place of a stamp—to communicate official matters for free. These signed envelopes are now highly collectible because they contain the authentic signature of the president and are often tied to historical correspondence.
