Just weeks before the British destroy Washington and burn the White House, President Madison appoints a new Naval Officer at the conclusion of the War of 1812
Founding Father and fourth President of the United States JAMES MADISON authentic autograph parchment naval appointment of Francis H. Gregory to serve as "Lieutenant in the Navy", countersigned by Secretary of the Navy, WILLIAM JONES, in handsome vintage framed display. Dated from Washington, June 28, 1814 the document is signed at lower right by the President.
Just two months later, British forces would overrun American defenses at the Battle of Bladensburg, Maryland and march into Washington, setting fire to the White House, the Capitol, and other government buildings in retaliation for American attacks in Canada.
Francis H. Gregory went on to have a long and distinguished career with the Navy. Early on he surprised and captured an English slaver ship. In August, 1814 he was captured by the British and sent to England, where he remained 18 months. In 1821-23, while in command of the schooner Grampus, he was active in suppressing piracy on the coasts of Cuba and Mexico, capturing the notorious pirate brig, Pandrita. In 1844, he commanded the Raritan in the blockade of the Mexican coast, and during the Civil War he oversaw the construction of all vessels built outside of Navy yards, and was finally promoted to Rear Admiral.

Condition is as shown, framed and matted to an overall display size of 21.75" x 25" inside 24.75 x 28" gold gilt vintage wood frame under 98% UV-blocking acrylic pane. Document features folds and wrinkles, with several lightly toned spots, one affecting Jones' signature, seal lacking. Please review all images carefully for exact condition.
