Then-Presidential Candidate James Madison Signed "Free Frank" Envelope to his Brother-In-Law
Fourth President of the United States JAMES MADISON autograph folded Free Frank envelope, dated May 8 [1808] postmarked from Washington to Isaac Hite, Esq. The envelope is signed in the upper right hand corner by James Madison, the envelope is additionally entirely addressed in Madison's hand. Madison wrote to Isaac Hite Jr., his personal friend and brother-in-law. Hite had a storied career and is noted for having drafted the articles of
capitulation for the British surrender at Yorktown.

The free frank dates from Madison's term as Secretary of State, the cover is postmarked May 7th, [1808]. At the time Madison was already a nominated Presidential candidate having been nominated by his party's congressional caucus in January that same year.
James Madison was an American statesman, diplomat, and Founding Father who served as the fourth President of the United States from 1809 to 1817. Madison was popularly acclaimed the "Father of the Constitution" for his pivotal role in drafting and promoting the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights.
Before modern postage systems, presidents and other officials had the privilege of "franking" mail—signing the envelope in place of a stamp—to communicate official matters for free. These signed envelopes are now highly collectible because they contain the authentic signature of the president and are often tied to historical correspondence.
Item condition is as shown with overall toning and light wrinkles consistent with age, use and handling. Envelope is encased in a 4.75" x 9.5" slab. Mild scuff to front of encapsulate as pictured.
