Monroe was the last of the Founding Fathers to serve as President. His greatest achievement as a diplomat was his negotiation of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Elected President of the United States in 1816 and 1820, Monroe resolved long-standing grievances with the British, acquired Florida from Spain in 1819, and proclaimed the "Monroe Doctrine" in 1823.
