President Carter was a deeply religious man, the first evangelical Christian U.S. President. He taught Sunday school twice a month for over 40 years at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, continuing into his 90s.
This vintage metal cross was personally owned by President Carter, and was acquired directly from his estate. It was part of a larger group of 21 Nigerian crosses gifted to President Carter in 1999 during his role as co-chair of an international election observation mission in Nigeria. The crosses were accompanied by a note from First Lady Rosalynn Carter indicating they were presented by Mahamane Ousmane, the former President of Niger.
