JOHN FRANKLIN * PSA * Vanished POLAR EXPLORER Autograph Signed * RIP

$995.00

Guaranteed Authentic

Ill-fated vanished Polar Explorer Rear-Admiral Sir JOHN FRANKLIN scarce handwritten, one page undated autograph letter signed. Franklin thanks the eminent Scottish geologist Sir Roderick Impey Murchison for a book. Murchison, a central figure in British science and president of both the Royal Geographical Society and the Geological Society would later play an instrumental role in promoting and defending Franklin's legacy after his disappearance.

Franklin led two legendary expeditions to the Canadian Arctic and the islands of the Arctic Archipelago. During his third and final ill-fated expedition while attempting to traverse the Northwest Passage in 1845, Franklin's ships became icebound off King William Island, where he died in June 1847. The ships were abandoned ten months later, and the entire crew died from causes such as starvation, hypothermia, and scurvy – leaving behind three well-preserved mummies, tales of cannibalism, and a haunting, frozen mystery.

Franklin writes:

“Many thanks, my dear Sir, for the Dante, which is indeed very portable. The generous gift will often remind me of you and your kindness.

I am sorry that I am engaged both on Friday and today and therefore cannot have the pleasure of dining with you.

Ever yours truly,

John Franklin
