KING HENRY III of France 1580 AUTOGRAPH Royal Document SIGNED
Guaranteed Authentic
Assassinated King of France and Poland, HENRY III (1574 - 1589) autograph royal manuscript in French, on vellum, signed with at the conclusion as, "Henry". The document dates from 1580 and regards a payment from the King's Treasury (the Épargne) of 1,000 écus to a man named "Jehan Renoulz". A truly remarkable document signed by a King over 400 years ago. Henry was notably assassinated at 37 years old and documents from his reign are exceptionally scarce.
The fourth son of King Henry II of France and Queen Catherine de' Medici, he was not expected to inherit the French throne and was thus elected Monarch of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1573. At the age of 22, Henry abandoned Poland-Lithuania upon inheriting the French throne when his brother, Charles IX died without an heir.
On 1 August 1589, a young fanatical friar carrying false papers was granted access to the king stating that he had a secret message to deliver. When Henry signaled for his attendants to step back for privacy, the friar whispered in his ear and plunged a knife into his abdomen.
