Committee of Public Safety document signed just 3 months before the French "Reign of Terror" firebrand is sent to the guillotine.

French lawyer, statesman, controversial figure and and chief architect of the French Revolution's "Reign of Terror", MAXIMILIEN ROBESPIERRE, scarce, large partly printed Committee of Public Safety document signed, dated April 1794. Just 3 months later, Robespierre would be summarily guillotined.

Robespierre signs the "Decree of the Committee of Public Safety" appointing citizen Siéjas "to fulfill the functions of commissioner to the isles of the wind, French colonies...", along with public safety members Barère, Carnot, Billaud-Varenne, Prieur-Duvernois and Collot-D'Herbois.

On July 27, 1793 Robespierre was appointed a member of the Committee of Public Safety. Robespierre believed the virtue needed for any democratic government was extremely lacking in the French people. As a result he decided to weed out those he believed could never possess this virtue. The result was the Reign of Terror, a period of the French Revolution when a series of massacres and numerous public executions took place in response to revolutionary fervor and accusations of treason by the Committee of Public Safety.

Robespierre, having been branded a failed dictator by the right and a moderate by the left, eventually saw his popular support collapse. Ultimately, he was unable to kill his rivals faster than they could unite against him; He was arrested and taken to a prison where approximately 90 individuals – including Robespierre – were executed without trial in the following days.
