Garrett was an American sheriff best known as the man who killed the notorious outlaw, Billy the Kid. Born in Alabama in 1850, Garrett headed west in 1869 to pursue life as a cowboy. He eventually settled in New Mexico, where he became sheriff of Lincoln County. Although Garrett claimed to have killed 21 men in his lifetime, the actual number is likely less than 10. Garrett himself was later gunned down under mysterious circumstances in 1908 at the age of 57.
