JAWS author and screenwriter PETER BENCHLEY fantastic content typewritten letter dated May 11, 1976 signed discussing the genesis of his idea for the JAWS book and promoting his new novel (and blockbuster movie), THE DEEP. Signed at conclusion with a fine blue ink signature.


In part, "I got the idea from several things. I had been studying sharks for a long time, and then, in 1964, I read about a fisherman catching a 4500-pound great white shark off of Long Island. I thought to myself: what would happen if a monster like that came to a resort town and wouldn't go away."


Based on the 1974 novel by Benchley, the summer blockbuster movie JAWS was officially released in theaters in the United States on June 20, 1975. Directed by a young Steven Spielberg, the film became a massive cultural phenomenon, and spawned. Benchley's book spent 44 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and sold an estimated 20 million copies worldwide.
