STS-51-L CHALLENGER DISASTER ASTRONAUT RON McNAIR SIGNED SPACE SHUTTLE FIRST DAY COVER

CHALLENGER Space Shuttle disaster hero and Mission Specialist RON McNAIR boldly signed "Space Shuttle Wind Tunnel Test" First Day Cover, postmarked March 20, 1978 - the year McNair was selected as one of 35 applicants for the NASA astronaut program; McNair signs in bold black marker,
inscribing "Mission Specialist Astronaut".

The development of the Space Shuttle required an extensive wind tunnel test program and the cooperation of all the major wind tunnels in the United States. The Space Shuttle effort was the largest such program ever undertaken by this country. Aproximately 100,000 total hours of wind tunnel testing was conducted for aerodynamics, heat transfer, and structural dynamics.

McNair was an American NASA astronaut and physicist. He died at the age of 35 during the launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger in which he was serving as one of three mission specialists in the crew of seven. Prior to the Challenger disaster, McNair flew as a mission specialist on STS-41-B aboard Challenger from February 3 - February 11, 1984 becoming the second black American in space.
