Salem Witch Trials participant and Secretary of the Massachusetts Bay Colony ISAAC ADDINGTON early autograph legal document signed, dated October 30, 1685. Seven years before the infamous Witch Trials, Addington signs off on a deposition regarding a debt with two signatures at the bottom of the document.

Addington, a lawyer and judge has been cited by many as a member of the grand jury convened in May 1692 charged with reviewing complaints and evidence against accused witches, voting to return indictments against several individuals, authorizing their prosecution before the special Court of Oyer and Terminer. Among those indicted were Sarah Good, Rebecca Nurse, Elizabeth Proctor, Bridget Bishop – and Tituba, an enslaved indigenous servant. Her dramatic testimony helped fuel the ensuing mass hysteria. Addington was additionally present for the examination of Elizabeth Proctor. During the proceedings, objections by Elizabeth's husband John Proctor led to his own arrest.

Addington later served as Chief Justice of the Superior Court of Judicature, the highest court in the Province of Massachusetts Bay.
