SCHUYLER COLFAX * PSA * Autograph Congress Signed JOHNSON IMPEACHMENT Pass

$875.00

Guaranteed Authentic

17th Vice President of the United States and former Speaker of the House of Representatives SCHUYLER COLFAX scarce, authentic handwritten admission pass to the Reporters Gallery during the Second Session of the 40th Congress.

The Second Session of the 40th Congress primarily focused on the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson. The House of Representatives impeached Johnson in 1868 for violating the Tenure of Office Act and for his policies on Reconstruction. In May, 1868 the Senate acquitted Johnson by a single vote.

Colfax writes: "Dear Keeper Reporters Gallery H. Reps: Admit DeB. Randolph Kevin correspondent of the N.Y. Evening Telegram to any unoccupied seat in the gallery during the 2nd session of 40th Congress.  / Schuyler Colfax / Speaker H Reps. / Jan. 8, 1868"

Today – as seen in the movie, LINCOLN – Colfax is perhaps best known for presiding over the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment which, when ratified by the states, abolished slavery. Though it is unusual for the speaker to vote, except to break a tie, Colfax directed the clerk to call his name after the roll call vote had been taken. He then dramatically cast the final vote in favor of the amendment to much applause from its supporters in the House.

The COLFAX handwritten admission pass has been thoroughly reviewed and CERTIFIED AUTHENTIC by PSA/DNA Authentication Services expert examination, and has been slabbed inside PSA/DNA's proprietary sonically-sealed encapsulate. UNCONDITIONALLY GUARANTEED GENUINE.
