"SECRETARIAT SENDS HIS REGARDS". An excellent racing Horseshoe Worn by Secretariat!
The "Thoro'Bred" branded shoe is accompanied by an original letter from Annette Covault. Covault was the busy booking secretary of Secretariat's home at Claiborne Farms. Annette Covault looked out on the stallion paddocks at the historic nursery for more than 20 years.
PLEASE NOTE: We have included an image of Anette Covault with Secretariat. The image is labeled "FOR REFERENCE ONLY" and is not included with the sale of the horseshoe. We have only included this photo to demonstrate Covault's personal relationship with Secretariat.
Secretariat wore aluminum shoes for racing and would have likely worn steel shoes back on the farm. The shoe is used, but cleaned of the "natural organic material", Covault jokes on Claiborne Farms letterhead, while noting, "SECRETARIAT sends his regards."
Living to 19 years of age, the legendary thoroughbred horse raced for 2 years and earned $1,316,808 in 41 races. As a 3-year-old, he set new track records in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes in winning the 1973 Triple Crown. He became the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years and his record-breaking victory in the Belmont Stakes, which he won by 31 lengths, is often considered the greatest race ever run by a thoroughbred racehorse.
