The Holy Grail of NASA Type I photograph collecting! A vintage 8" x 10" chromogenic glossy print of Aldrin during his mission EVA, taken November 14, 1966, on Kodak fiber-based paper. The image shows Aldrin working on the Agena Target Vehicle, an essential part of the mission's objectives, which included docking and maneuvering practices that would be critical for the Apollo missions.
As this was the last flight of the Gemini program, it was very important to fine-tune the art of an astronaut working efficiently outside of the spacecraft, something that had not yet been perfected. Buzz Aldrin made a (then) record three EVAs on this flight, all of which accomplished multiple goals. Two were of the "stand-up" variety and one was tethered. The success of these spacewalks was attributed to an underwater training program that he worked out. The detail in this photo is amazing, very displayable.
The red ID “S-66-62926” on the front margin identifies an official period lab print; these were distributed in limited numbers to NASA and the press. This is one of the scarcest and certainly the most collectible of the NASA red number photographs.
This photograph has an excellent price record. A similar example of the same photograph sold at Christies Auction in 2020 for £43,750!
Photograph measures 8" x 10" and is encapsulated in a 10" x 13" PSA holder. Small speckling of black to upper and lower section of photograph. Some bumping/creasing to corners and edges of photograph. The color on the image is incredible and among the best preserved we've seen offered.
Sold as is, as shown.
