Theodore Roosevelt was Chairman of the Cove Neck Association, in 1911 the association agreed that each member would pledge up to $100 per year to fund the maintenance and improvement of the roads and related local infrastructure in Cove Neck. The Theodore Roosevelt Center also summarizes the Association’s purpose as supporting efforts to preserve and protect the local environment and community around Cove Neck.
Issued during one of the most dramatic years of Roosevelt’s life, the check predates his October 1912 assassination attempt, when a would-be assassin shot him in the chest while he campaigned as the Progressive Party’s candidate. True to his indomitable spirit, Roosevelt delivered a full 90-minute speech with the bullet still lodged in him.
