26th President the United States THEODORE ROOSEVELT typewritten letter signed on White House / Washington letterhead, as President. In a letter dated December 9, 1901 Roosevelt thanks author and publisher J.H. Sears for forwarding two books, and TR signs at conclusion with a bold, full signature. One correction in Roosevelt's hand to the recipient's name overwriting the typed "T" and changing it to a "J".
Like Roosevelt, Joseph Hamblin Sears was a native of Oyster Bay, LI so it's likely that he and TR were acquainted as both friends and neighbors. He began his publishing career as an author for Harper & Brothers, later headed the book firm of D. Appleton & Co., before successfully launching his own imprint, JH Sears Publishers.
1901 was a consequential year for TR, having assumed the office of President follwing the death of his predecessor, William McKinley. At the time, Roosevelt was the youngest person to take office as President.
