ULYSSES S. GRANT * BAS * Tragic 1884 AUTOGRAPH Envelope SIGNED * Elberon, NJ
Guaranteed Authentic
18th President of the United States and Commanding General of the United States Army, ULYSSES S. GRANT fantastic hand-addressed “signed” envelope from Grant’s former “Summer White House” in Elberon, NJ addressed to “Gen. Jas. Grant Wilson / Rosefield / Ridgewood, NJ”, postmarked August 1884.
The essential components of a Grant "signature" and rank are included on this envelope, with the words, "GEN[ERAL]" and "GRANT" – in the same style he would sign his name.
James Grant Wilson was an American soldier, editor, author and publisher. Despite the name, Wilson himself was unrelated to Grant.
1884 was an exceptionally tragic year for Ulysses Grant and his family. It was while staying at Elberon that the former President learned of his financial collapse, felt the sharp pain that would lead to his throat cancer diagnosis – and later that same year would lead to the agreement with the ailing POTUS to write his personal memoirs.
The Grant handwritten envelope has been thoroughly reviewed and CERTIFIED AUTHENTIC BY (BAS) BECKETT AUTHENTICATION SERVICES. Purchase includes original Letter of Authenticity. UNCONDITIONALLY GUARANTEED GENUINE.
Condition is as shown with staining, some feathering from wet ink, and wear consistent with age, use and handling. Envelope measures appx. 3" x 5.5".
