PRESIDENT ULYSSES S. GRANT PERSONALLY OWNED & USED WHITE HOUSE CHINA

18th President of the United States ULYSSES S. GRANT His personally-owned and used elaborately hand-painted 8” Chinese Export Rose Medallion porcelain plate used at the White House. The plate is from a set specially commissioned for President Ulysses S. Grant and First Lady Julia Dent Grant, and bearing the presidential “USG” monogram within a laurel wreath, circa 1868. The plates were then later used by the Grants at their Manhattan apartment, post-presidency. An incredible, original artifact from the life of one of America's greatest military and political leaders.

Elected in 1868, Grant served as President from 1869 - 1877.

Lavishly decorated with alternating medallions of hand-painted polychrome court scenes and vignettes of birds, flowers, and butterflies against a richly gilded ground of scrolling vines. The plate was part of a larger service ordered by the First Lady from Grant's boyhood friend and merchant Daniel Ammen in China, and presumably used in the White House during the Grant administration and later moved to the Grant's New York City apartment post-presidency.
