18th President of the United States and Commanding General of the United States Army,  ULYSSES S. GRANT fine handwritten autograph letter signed to his close friend, L.S. Felt, a successful merchant in Grant's hometown of Galena. Grant signs once in-text as "Grant" and again at the conclusion with a full signature "U. S. Grant". The entire letter is written on the highly desired "Armies of the United States" letterhead. 

Grant's uncharacteristically chatty letter also mentions Felt’s daughter, Katherine “Kittie” Felt, and Elihu B. Washburne, a fellow Galena resident. Washburne eventually served as Grant’s Secretary of State for just eleven days - the shortest tenure on record - before being appointed Minister to France.


Dated March 8, 1867 and written during the country's post-war, Grant-supervised Reconstruction period, Grant pens, "A letter is just received from Jones which says that confidence is expressed by Washburne’s physician that he will be able to effect a cure though improvement is slow. Jones was about starting to do up, as he expresses it, Italy. He will probably not get home for two or three months yet.

Mrs. Grant and myself are going to New York on the 19th of this month. We will be there about one week, If Miss Kittie is there, or should be there at that time, we would like to have her return to Washington with us to pay a visit before she starts to Europe.

My family are all well and join me in desiring to be kindly remembered to your family yours truly U. S. Grant”
