American Secretary of State during the Lincoln administration, WILLIAM H. SEWARD handsome signed carte de visite photograph. Seward desirably pens his signature across the image rather than on the mount. The only Seward signed CDV we have handled in our company's 40 year history. Additionally, this is an original Matthew Brady CDV (as stamped on the back). Brady was the most famous photographer of the Civil War era and even his unsigned photographs are highly demanded. 


The U.S. revenue stamp on the reverse of this CDV dates it's purchase to August 1, 1864, - August 1, 1866. As part of the Civil War Revenue act to help fund the Union war effort, the U.S. government passed a law in 1864 requiring a tax on photographs, including CDVs. 


Seward served as the Secretary of State under Lincoln throughout the Civil War and was one of the targets of the 1865 assassination plot that killed Lincoln, although Seward was gravely injured he managed to survive. He notably engineered the purchase of Alaska after the war.

Condition is as shown, irregular trim to photo and mount, pin hole above Seward's head, U.S. revenue stamp affixed to the back of the photograph. PSA encapsulate measures an overall size of appx. 4.25" x 7.25".
