RARE WILLIAM McKINLEY HAND-DRAFTED LEGAL PETITION – EARLY CAREER DOCUMENT FROM HIS LAW PRACTICE, c. 1870s
Exceptional, handwritten legal petition penned by future U.S. President William McKinley during his early career as an attorney in Ohio, unsigned but entirely in his hand. McKinley, the 25th President of the United States, first built his reputation as a lawyer and Civil War veteran before entering politics.
The document, headed “The State of Ohio, Stark County”, concerns David Hammond vs. John & George F. Laisd, in a dispute over unpaid debts and legal expenses. In this petition, McKinley carefully lays out the plaintiff’s case, stating that the defendants are indebted for “four hundred and thirty-two dollars and five cents,” and details how the plaintiff undertook the defense for the partnership, paying costs and preparing every element necessary for a successful case — with total expenses reaching $1,299.16, a considerable sum for the era.
CERTIFIED AUTHENTIC BY PSA/DNA AUTHENTICATION SERVICES EXPERT EXAMINATION. UNCONDITIONALLY GUARANTEED GENUINE – quite simply one of the finest McKinley documents available on the market. Encapsulated in PSA/DNA's proprietary sonically sealed holder!
PLEASE NOTE: The scrap is entirely in the handwriting of McKinley, it is NOT SIGNED by McKinley. If you are unclear or have questions about this please ask.
The partial brief measures 5.25" x 7.5", the overall encapsulate measures approx. 6.5" x 10". Fold lines, uneven edges, as to be expected and as pictured. Handwriting still remains remarkably bold and legible.
Own a one of a kind, original piece of American history! The perfect gift for the civil War collector, autograph enthusiast, or History buff. A must have addition to any collection.
