Both John Hancock and the Partners (Barnard and Harrison) who he had forwarded this payment to over in England had worked diligently for over a year to repeal the Stamp Act. In fact the ship that carried the news of the repeal of the Stamp Act, "is owned by the worthy Patriot, JOHN HANCOCK, Esq; who first ventured his ship with a very rich Cargo for London, with a Clearance without the Stamp." (Boston Globe, 1766).

Henry Atkins was a customs worker and a known British Loyalist. While going to his place of work on July 27, 1775, a mob stood in front of the customs house. This “revolutionary party” prevented Atkins from performing his duties and demanded he renounce the policies of the British government.  When he refused, Atkins was promptly arrested and confined to a local jail.

JOHN HANCOCK was a merchant, statesman and prominent Patriot of the American Revolution. He served as President of the Second Continental Congress and was the first and third Governor of Massachusetts. He is remembered for his large and stylish signature on the Declaration of Independence.

PLEASE NOTE: The document on the bottom of the frame is a reproduction of the verso of the document which Hancock signed. The Hancock signature itself is not a reproduction in anyway and is 100% authentic - only the bottom document is reproduced.
