Aaron Burr was the third Vice President of the United States, serving under Thomas Jefferson, and is best known for killing Alexander Hamilton in a duel in 1804. Ambitious and controversial, Burr later became the center of a major Treason trial. The interrogatories stem from a case regarding Harman Blennerhassett, a lawyer and Virginia plantation owner who became implicated in the Burr's treasonous plot to liberate the Louisiana Territory from the U.S. by conducting a military expedition supplied by the British to create an independent nation. Although President Jefferson pushed for conviction, Burr was ultimately acquitted due to lack of concrete evidence and Chief Justice John Marshall's strict interpretation of the Constitution’s definition of treason.
